Metallurgical Plant Design, Construction, Commissioning, and Optimisation
The design of a mineral processing plant essentially depends on the ore mineralogy. Ore characterization and metallurgical testwork results dictate the appropriate processing option for the ore body. Plant location relative to the mine, TSF, access for mill consumables, available real estate, and overall safety is a critical decision.
Geotechnical Study
Geotechnical study of the proposed plant location is essential to ensure stability and the safety of the plant over the life of mine.

Dry Stacking Option for Tailings
Dry stacking of tailings is essentially storing dry tailings in series of lifts (reckoned from the maximum capacity the site can hold or contain while guaranteeing safety in terms of slope stability and bearing load) in a relatively flat pad area with an engineered bund. High-rate thickeners and belt filters or pressure filters are the critical component in this option whereby the drying of the tailings can be attained up to above 85% solids by weight prior to hauling or conveying the material to the stack facility by a system or combined systems of conveyors, stackers and/or trucking.
Stability Analysis
The internal and global stability of the series of heaps of dry tailings as they stand based on their designed angle of repose with a degree of reasonable compaction in areas immediate of the upstream side of the embankment bund while they're being placed, say, at every 0.3m lifts, their further consolidation through time by their own self-weight after combined traffic and roller compaction, the management of run-off water from rainfall through its flat pad area connected onto a flank spillway system, the total body force they subject the engineered bund where they are built upon, contained and buttressed will be ascertained such that failure by yielding would not occur after undergoing a thorough computer simulation analysis, and the individual slope stabilities of the heap of dry stacked tailings and the engineered bund.
Another type of storage for the dry stacking of tailings is the construction of a mini-TSF that can be built fairly straight-forward either by the upstream method or centerline method or downstream, depending on the material behaviour. This is especially useful in areas with high rainfall and where the dry stack tailings contains sizable amount of fines with the potential of it to mudslide.
Dust Management
The potential dust generation of the stacked dry tailings during the summer months such that the operation complies with the DENR AO in terms of the quantity of particulates in the air.
Advantages of Dry Stacking
Massive storage capacity in a given area compared to slurry tailings
Eliminates management of water fraction (65% of slurry mass)
Avoids pH adjustment, detoxification, renaturation issues
Easier and safer to cover with soil for regrassing during reclamation
No mammoth-size hydraulic structure left for host community
Static Geochemistry Study on Mine Waste Rock and Tailings
As all mines pursue to manage their wastes, whether in the form of rock waste, mine water and processed water, free from generating low pH drainage is imperative. Static geochemistry aims to identify the total sulphur content of all materials that are classified as waste and processed tailings.
Key Parameters Analyzed
  • Total sulphur content
  • % oxidisable sulphur
  • Average production of H2SO4 in kg per tonne
  • Remaining carbonates
  • Acid-base accounting
  • PAF and NAF identification in terms of sulphur content
Applications
  • Basis for waste modelling
  • Disposal/storage planning
  • Proactive acid mine drainage prevention
  • Environmental compliance
  • Risk mitigation strategies
Hydrogeological Survey and Water Inflow Risk Control
The conduct of a hydrogeological survey involves the study of every available geological and structural data and groundwater information for the development of a specific work programme that shall address the particular groundwater problem of a mine.
Data Collection
Gathering geological, structural, and groundwater information
Program Development
Creating a hybrid surface monitoring and groundwater depressurization plan
Monitoring
Installation of surface monitoring wells to create a thorough picture of the water regime
Implementation
Drilling of depressurization/dewatering holes in the underground
Risk Mitigation
Development of a robust water inflow risk mitigation plan
Mining underground can only be optimized through a thorough understanding of the groundwater and controlling it such that it does not impact negatively on mining and pose risk to workers working at depth. It also impacts on the overall ground support system practices and the safety of the mine such that the development and implementation of a robust water inflow risk mitigation plan is paramount.
Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Analysis: Our Expertise
Deterministic vs. Probabilistic Approach
A Deterministic Seismic Hazard Analysis (DSHA) methodology typically involved a simple judgement by an expert as to the largest earthquake that a significant source could produce. The earthquake identified as the Maximum Credible Earthquake (MCE) for a given source is often acknowledged as being a judgement based on the level of information available to the seismic hazard assessment team. The MCE is often simply, and quite incorrectly, chosen as the largest magnitude on the nearest major fault.
A Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Analysis (PSHA) collectively considers the contributions from all known potential sources of earthquake shaking. Most importantly, a PSHA considers the likelihood of various earthquakes from multiple potential seismic sources, each having a range of uncertainty in source characteristics (e.g. rupture length, distance, fault dip, maximum magnitude, slip rate). Uncertainty is treated explicitly, and the annual probability of exceedance in specified ground motions, commonly expressed as spectral acceleration at periods of interest, are computed.
Industry Requirements
The Mining Association of Canada (MAC) and ICOLD following the Vale Dam disaster in Brazil recently, are now requiring performance-based seismic risk assessment of Tailings Storage Facilities (TSF).
To obtain hazard curves and an evaluation of the TSF model by a non-linear structural response analysis under properly selected ground motion records is important in design simulations. If natural ground motion records are limited, synthetic accelerograms are generated using stochastic point-source models by identifying the most contributing magnitude and distance combinations from disaggregation of the PSHA results.

Ofir Consulting has over 25 years of experience, particularly in the conduct of DSHA, and more recently, in the conduct of PSHA and their ground motion logs, especially applied in the design of tailings dams, and in vertical structures and their foundations.
Integrated Surface and Underground Mine Water Management and Treatment
System Review
A review of the underground and surface mine water sources, collection points and tributaries will be done to develop a flowchart of the whole mine drainage system.
Sample Collection
Samples at sources of groundwater, mine sumps, collection ponds, any mine facilities discharge to include the plant's discharges, natural water systems such as creeks, streams, rivers, and confluences will be collected together with corresponding flow measurements for every site where water samples are collected.
Analysis
The collected samples will be analyzed for baseline information in terms of levels of pollutants that may include heavy metals, sulphates, nitrates, BOD, COD, TSS, TDS, CN, DO etc.
Water Balance
An overall water balance and site loadings will be established and thereby will be simulated to find out the best way for treatment in terms of optimizing the locations of treatment to achieve the DAO 35 standards while minimizing its cost.
Seasonal Assessment
Such optimised treatment approach is best achieved when it is conducted over several months to cover both the dry and wet seasons.
Pastefill
Cemented pastefilling is a method use in storing mine tailings underground both to backfill underground mine stopes, in achieving sound ground control management, and in extending the life or in reducing the sizes of existing surface tailings storage facilities. It is by far the preeminent form of tailings storage management for underground mines employing bulk mining methods such as open stoping, sublevel longhole stoping, blasthole open stoping, in high output drift and fill mining, and in VCR mining (vertical crater retreat).
Composition
  • Wet fine process tailings (75-85% solids by weight)
  • Hydraulic binder (3-9% by dry total paste weight)
  • Mixing water to set paste solids density of 70-80%
Binder Options
  • Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC)
  • Combined OPC and fly ash
  • Combined OPC and slag
Advantages
  • Can use 100% mill tailings
  • Relatively high strength with low binder content
  • Reduces surface tailings storage requirements
  • Improves ground control management
Ofir Consulting has over 7 years of combined experience in pastefill design, hydraulic pumping design and optimisation of paste velocity (reticulation studies underground including itemising all underground infrastructures needed to convey the paste backfill), in bench-top rheological studies to create a pumpable paste, in paste strength tests, in establishing flow loop tests underground, in ground control management involving paste backfill, in working with pastefill experts such as Paterson & Cooke and MineFill USA, in thickening and filtration design and in the commissioning of paste plants.
